What is a clinical psychologist?

In Ontario, a clinical psychologist is a regulated health professional who is trained in the assessment, treatment and prevention of behavioural and mental conditions.  Working with clients, a psychologist will help identify patterns of behaviour, thinking, and feeling, and will help to replace maladaptive patterns with adaptive ones in order to improve overall functioning.  Psychologists in Ontario are regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario and this governing body sets standards for the practice of psychology.   Psychologists are one of two professions in Ontario that can render a diagnosis of a mental or behavioural disorder (along with physicians).
